My San Jose - Virtual Story Workshop

5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

What is San Jose to you? A life experience? A memory? A frame of mind? An iconic place? How would you capture something essential about your city?

Join San Jose based writer of place, Jenny Clendenen, for a virtual workshop that will ask you to consider all of these questions and more. In this multimedia (writing, video, photo) multi-genre (poetry, prose, performance) generative session, you will have a chance to brainstorm ideas and start a story that you can finish and submit to the San Jose Story Map Contest. You will receive direct feedback on your work that is designed to help you grow and flourish as an artist. If selected, your work will be published as part of the San Jose Story Map in partnership with San Jose State University.

The SJSU Story Map Project is looking for untold stories, hidden histories, and unheard voices from the diverse communities in San José. It might be an unknown artwork by a Latinx artist, the past life of a forgotten building, or the voices of a hidden hillside creek. It might be a lesson, a memory, or a life-changing experience. It might be your story, or someone else’s, or both.

Here’s a “starter list” to get you thinking:

  • If you had to leave San José forever in just 8 hours, how would you spend them?

  • How have the wildfires, pandemic, election, and/or other trauma affected your experience of San José?

  • Is there someone or something in San José that you love? or hate?

  • Where in San José do you feel most at peace? or most agitated?

  • Why do you (or don’t you) call San José home?

You may bring a suitable photo, video, or text to share or workshop.
