Events › 2024 Gira de Libro: Library Tour by Bicycle

The San José Public Library (SJPL) invites you to ride your bicycle, explore your libraries, and enjoy a light lunch with us.

This year marks the ninth annual Gira de Libro Library Tour by Bicycle, a guided community and staff bicycle ride. We will ride the Guadalupe River Trail, visit two of SJPL’s 25 locations, and enjoy a few stops along the way.

The Tour starts and finishes at the Joyce Ellington Branch Library, 491 E. Empire St, San Jose on Saturday, May 18.

The Tour will visit the following libraries:

• Joyce Ellington
• Alviso

We will stop to regroup, tour each library, and enjoy a light lunch at Alviso Branch Library, provided by San José Public Library.

The total distance of the Tour is approximately 20 miles.

• What to Bring:
  • Water Bottles: Water bottle refilling stations are available at most locations. Bring a reusable water bottle and refill your bottle as needed.
  • Bike Helmet: According to the CA helmet law, persons under age 18 must wear a helmet. We encourage everyone to wear a helmet.
  • Snacks: Make sure to bring enough food to sustain you for this event (It is a long day in the saddle!).

• How to Prepare:
  • Make sure your bicycle is in good working order!
  • You’ll need gears for this ride!
  • Please confirm the brakes are in good working condition, and the chain is lubricated (it should not sound like birds chirping).
  • Dress for the weather.
  • Consider sun protection.
• Rider Requirements:
  • Everyone who is powering a bicycle must:
    • Be a competent rider.
    • Be able to ride in a straight line
    • Be able to keep a 5-10 mile-per-hour pace for 20 miles.
  • Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
• Pace Details: The Tour is ridden at a casual, leisurely pace. We stay together as a group.
• Inclement Weather: The Tour will not be held in the event of inclement weather.
