Dia de los Muertos Workshop Series

Description

Come learn about Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, and the traditions that come with it. Through this series, families and individuals of all ages are welcome to learn more about the traditions involved with the celebration of Dia de los Muertos, building the altars, and the items placed on the altar to honor those who have died. 

Each workshop is from 6PM-7PM and presented in English and Spanish. Locations vary and change between Biblioteca Latinoamericana and Washington United Youth Center, both located at 921 S. First Street. All ages are welcome.

Dates and topics:

  • August 15 (Washington United Youth Center): Knowing the altar through the day and year counts in the Mexihca "Aztec" Calendar. The tables of counts and numbering in the language of the ancient Mexicans.
  • August 29 (Biblioteca Latinoamericana): When the altar is raised and understanding the "4 Directions"
  • September 5 (Washington United Youth Center): Understanding the altar with the use of the "4 Directions"
  • September 19 (Biblioteca Latinoamericana): Understanding the design of the altar and the importance of skulls
  • September 26 (Washington United Youth Center): Gathering and preparing the materials for making sugar skulls
  • October 3 (Biblioteca Latinoamericana): Making sugar skulls
  • October 17 (Washington United Youth Center): Decorating sugar skulls and understanding the importance of the elements - earth, wind, fire, water - to the altar
  • October 24 (Biblioteca Latinoamericana): Building the altar

The workshop series will culminate with a Dia de los Muertos celebration on Saturday, November 2, at Washington United Youth Center.

This series is hosted by Biblioteca Latinoamericana Library and Washington United Youth Center, in partnership with Centro Aztlan Chicomoztoc

This is a free event. No registration is required.
