Summer STEaM at Almaden

4:30 PM – 5:30 PM
Almaden

Description

Drop in on Tuesday afternoons in June and July at 4:30 p.m. for a new STEAM adventure every week:

Jun. 3 - It's a Solid... It's a Liquid... It's Oobleck!
Oobleck is a suspension, or a substance that can mimic the qualities of a solid or a liquid. Participants will make their own oobleck and experiment with it to determine under which circumstances it behaves more like a liquid or a solid.

Jun. 10 - Lego Engineering Challenge
At the workshop, children will be encouraged to build and solve problems. Children will learn to brainstorm and build with Lego® bricks, and then to redesign and build as they face challenges. For children ages 5 and up.

Jun. 17 - Cryptography (Science from Scientists)
Science from Scientists presents a crash course in cryptography, the science of encoding and decoding secret messages. Participants are introduced to different types of ciphers, including transposition and substitution ciphers. Participants work through a variety of code-breaking activities that make use of tools, keys, or just
their own brains! Children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult.

Jun. 24 - Bubble Science
Join us for some bubble fun! What happens when bubbles meet a gust of air? How about a bowl of water? How do you make bigger bubbles? Let’s blow bubbles and figure it out. This activity will take place in the courtyard.

Jul. 1 - Logic Games
Work individually or in teams to solve a variety of logic puzzles

Jul. 8 - Insect Discovery Lab (SaveNature)
Explore the fantastic lives of beetles, millipedes, hissing cockroaches, walking sticks, whip scorpions and more! Participants will be introduced to the extraordinarily diverse world of insects and other arthropods and will learn about their key role in the web of life. This interactive program emphasizes scientific observation, insect identification and the natural history of arthropods. Join us to spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and foster a love for nature! Participation is limited to 25 children.

Jul. 15 - Solar System (Science from Scientists)
Participants will challenge their assumptions about the scale of our Solar System by building models in order to begin to visualize how much of space is really just . . . vast, empty space. They will use two separate models, one for relative size and one for relative distance, evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each model. Children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult.

Jul. 22 - Lego Engineering Challenge
At the workshop, children will be encouraged to build and solve problems. Children will learn to brainstorm and build with Lego® bricks, and then to redesign and build as they face challenges. For children ages 5 and up.

Jul. 29 - Rainbow Walking Water
Learn how water can seem to defy gravity and move up a paper towel using capillary action.

Please check individual session descriptions for specifics including recommended age ranges.

Free, with limited capacity. Tickets will be distributed starting 60 minutes before the program.
