I think I would have liked this book better if, like in The Fairest of All, there was more of Ursula's story and perspective before she became a villain, and I would have preferred to see more internal struggle from her and maybe even a hint of redemption, even if that meant diverging from what happened in the film. They did it for Snow White's Evil Queen, I'm not sure why they couldn't have done the same for Ursula, who I think could have been an even more relatable character since a big aspect of her story was that she was unaccepted and treated poorly because of the ways she did not fit in with society. I would like to have seen that sort of character, one ostracized and made to feel wretched and hated for being her true self, who struggled with anger and resentment towards the society that belittled and bullied her, learn to find power and strength alongside compassion and kindness. I think this was a missed opportunity for a much more empowering story.

I was really excited for this book but in the end was disappointed. It felt like the author was trying too hard. She included parts of other Disney stories and they just seemed out of place it didn't go with the story. It was a little hard to read because it jumped every where and didn't really flow. Had it given more detail and depth to the actual story of Ursula it could have been a really great book.

As much as I like The Little Mermaid, I didn't like this version. It was very much like the Disney version, but also felt like it tried too hard to be deeper and more original.
