Herb & Dorothy Vogel are an endearing art amassing couple who live in a small, cramped NYC apartment packed to the rafters with their collection. Even more remarkable is their seemingly humble background or otherwise “normalness.” Although they hobnob with the art worlds’ most famous citizens, they are not wealthy or born into famous families.

Dorothy was a librarian and Herb was a postal worker. They collected minimalist and conceptual art before it became popular and rather than selling their massive collection (over 4000 pieces, worth millions of dollars) they donated all of it! They continue to collect art and never miss a gallery opening. They are personal acquaintances with hundreds of artists (including Christo and Chuck Close who both appear in this film) with whom they personally visit and select their favorite pieces.

What does it mean to be an art collector? To Herb and Dorothy Vogel it means they have to like the art, and it has to fit inside their teeny NYC apartment.
