This fictional account of Deborah Sampson's military service in disguise during the Revolutionary War pays far more attention to its protagonist's thoughts, feelings, and motivations than other works on the subject I've read previously. It's insightful and informed by contemporary understandings while its characters remain true to the beliefs, values, and behavioral standards of their time. The novel is well-written and enjoyable.
