"As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer--the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it's never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy's dangerous soul magic. When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he'll help her prove she's fit to rule, if she'll help him reclaim his stolen magic. But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder--and more peril--than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she'll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected... or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever."--Jacket flap.

This book was SUPER fantastical and I absolutely loved every minute of it!

When Amora's performance to become the High Animancer of her kingdom goes awry, she finds herself on an unexpected journey with an even more unlikely crew. A princess, her almost lover, a pirate, and a mermaid board a magical ship together and the kingdom's future will never look the same.

Adalyn Grace did a great job in building a very visually vivid world. I definitely sensed Hunger Game vibes as she described the different types of magic and the islands where those possessing these different magical skills lived. I really saw the outrageous costumes, smelled the enticing foods, and felt what the main character felt… mainly pressure to be all that she is meant to be.

While the characters and, at times plot, were somewhat predictable, I felt fully immersed in this seafaring journey. I found myself rooting for this ragtag team and converted to the cause of the cursed, condemned, and bound to obligation characters.

A dark & twisted seafaring adventure story for teens about a princess determined to save her kingdom at all costs. For fans of Sarah Henning's Sea Witch duology.
