Like a great movie, the elegance and readability of this book made me swoon. Gabriel captures the intensity and importance of the 20 years or so of the rise and fall of abstract expressionism that put Greenwich Village on the map and moved the center of the art world from Paris to New York City where it has stayed. Also during this time, for the first time ever, the dominantly male art world accepted female artists as equals which helped them thrive. Though the respect was earned with wildly creative hard work and persistence. The stories of many artists and their significant works are woven in and out of those of the five main characters. Lee Krasner’s husband, Jackson Pollock’s story is particularly compelling.
