Deadly Cross
Large Print - 2020
"Kay Willingham led a life as glamorous as it was public--she was a gorgeous Georgetown socialite, philanthropist, and the ex-wife of the vice president. So why was she parked in a Bentley convertible idling behind a DC private school, in the middle of the night, with the man who was the head of that school? Who shot them both, point blank, and why? The shocking double homicide is blazed across the internet, TV, newspapers--and across Alex Cross's mind. Kay had been his patient once. And maybe more. While John Sampson of DC Metro Police investigates the last movements of Christopher Randall, the educator killed along with Kay Willingham, detective Alex Cross and FBI special agent Ned Mahoney find unanswered questions from Willingham's past, before she arrived in DC and became known in DC society as someone who could make things happen. They travel to Alabama to investigate Kay's early years. There they find a world of trouble, corruption, and secrets, all of them closed to outsiders like Cross and Mahoney. Kay had many enemies, but all of them seemed to need her alive. The harder the investigators push, the more resistance they find when they leave behind the polite law offices and doctors' quarters of the state capital. Alex Cross will need to use all his skills as a doctor, a detective, and a family man to prevent that resistance from turning lethal...again"--From the publisher's web site.

Add a CommentFinally! James put more effort in this plot, I did not guess correctly who was the serial killer. I did figure out Kay's murderer. I still enjoy this series and some of his others. The others I mainly listen to on CD while driving or at home. I do admire his charitable work with children.
I am pleasantly surprised by 'Deadly Cross' I have been so disappointed in James Patterson lately, so I hope this book means he turned a corner back to the writer he was before he became a novel factory.
'Deadly Cross' features our intrepid, multi-career hero, Alex Cross. I found this particular book/mystery multi-faceted and stunningly shocking with major events that will affect him and his family going forward in future novels. Despite Cross encountering problems on an abundance of levels, personal and professional, the story felt a bit slow at times. I also think it was necessary to weave all the parts of the puzzle.

One of his better "recent" books. He's been slacking off and letting his co-authors do most of the heavy lifting.
This book was slow at times but entertaining. I've found most of his books, as well as other authors, pick up the pace as they get toward the last half. True I didn't read this one as quick as some others but was still good.
I know eventually nanamama will have to die but that will be a fantastic character loss. The one chapter where there's a voice in the basement and Bree grabs a gun and nana grabs an iron skillet was great. And I can just picture her, 92 years old, somewhat tall but slender African American lady, in an apron, grabbing a skillet. AND being still strong enough to hold and swing it.
James Patterson has co-authored some good reads with some of his co-authors. But, he is clearly at his best when he writes solo. This latest in the Alex Cross series of books is really well done. The story line is highly engaging with the usual multiple cases going on at once. The characters who are always part of his Cross series are well done as usual, and the new additions are well developed. No spoilers from me. Great read. Enjoy!
Slow moving. Disappointment. Nothing here to make a page turn. I would have put it down but am in the lockdown with not much else to read. Pass on this one. Along came a spider was a page turner.
